Newham stretches from Canning Town in the south to Stratford in the north, covering some of East London's most diverse and rapidly changing neighbourhoods. The borough has a large and established Muslim community, with mosques spread across every major area — from purpose-built Islamic centres to converted terraces that have served the same streets for decades.

FirstRow currently covers mosques across Newham's main postcode districts: E6, E7, E12, E13, E15, and E16.

East Ham — the highest density

East Ham (E6 and the lower stretch of E12) has more mosques per square mile than almost anywhere else in Newham. The High Street North and Barking Road corridors have several within walking distance of each other.

East Ham Islamic Centre on Market Street is one of the larger community hubs, with regular jamaat times for all five prayers. It sits near East Ham station, making it accessible from most of the borough.

Anjuman-e-Islamia Newham Mosque on High Street North serves the local community with a women's prayer space — one of the few East Ham mosques with this noted on FirstRow.

Madina Masjid East Ham and Al Amaan Education Trust on Barking Road round out the main options in the E6 corridor. If you're near East Ham or Upton Park station, you're within a short walk of at least three or four active mosques at any given prayer time.

Nearest stations: East Ham (District, Hammersmith & City), Upton Park (District, Hammersmith & City)

Forest Gate — E7's quieter mosque scene

Forest Gate has a solid cluster of mosques along and around Romford Road and Woodgrange Road. The area is less densely packed than East Ham but has enough choice that you're unlikely to miss a jamaat if you're nearby.

Several mosques in E7 and E12 operate from residential streets — smaller in capacity, but often with jamaat times that differ from the larger centres, giving more flexibility across the day.

Nearest stations: Forest Gate (Elizabeth line), Wanstead Park (Overground)

Stratford — growing provision

Stratford (E15) has seen significant development over the past decade, and mosque provision has grown with the population. Darul Jannah & Stratford Masjid on Plaistow Road and Stratford Islamic Association on The Grove are two of the main options.

Hasanah Centre Stratford covers the area around the station and Westfield. If you're passing through Stratford and need to catch a prayer, these are the closest options to the transport hub.

Nearest station: Stratford (Elizabeth line, Central, Jubilee, Overground, DLR)

Plaistow and Upton Park

The area around Green Street and the Barking Road spine through Plaistow has several mosques catering to the local community. Plaistow Jamia Islamia and Masjid Al-Hikmah near Upton Park are well-established, with regular daily jamaats.

The Green Street area is particularly walkable — if you're in the market, you're rarely far from a mosque.

Nearest stations: Upton Park (District, Hammersmith & City), Plaistow (District, Hammersmith & City)

Canning Town and Beckton

The southern end of the borough is more spread out. Darul Arqam Muslim Community Centre in Canning Town and Beckton Islamic Association & Beckton Muslim Centre serve these areas. Beckton in particular is worth knowing — it's an underserved part of the borough and Beckton Islamic Association is the main option for residents in E6 6 and the surrounding streets.

Nearest stations: Canning Town (Jubilee, DLR), Beckton (DLR)

Checking times before you leave

Jamaat times in Newham vary more than in Tower Hamlets — there's less coordination between mosques, so the same prayer can fall anywhere across a 45-minute window depending on which mosque you're heading to.

On FirstRow, tap the prayer name (Fajr, Zuhr, Asr, Maghrib, Isha) to filter for mosques that still have an upcoming jamaat for that prayer. The list sorts by how soon each jamaat starts — not by distance — so the top result is always the most time-critical option.

If you want to check a specific neighbourhood, set your location manually using the location pill at the top of the screen. This lets you see what's available near East Ham station, for example, even if you're travelling from elsewhere.

Tips for praying in Newham

  • Jumu'ah in East Ham — the area around East Ham station has multiple options between 1:00pm and 2:15pm on Fridays. East Ham Islamic Centre and the High Street North mosques are the most accessible.
  • Parking is easier than Tower Hamlets — most Newham mosques have residential streets nearby, though Green Street on Fridays is congested.
  • Times shift seasonally — summer Asr can be significantly later than winter, and some mosques adjust Isha after Tarawih season. Always check FirstRow on the day rather than relying on remembered times.

Mosque times on FirstRow are updated daily from each mosque's own schedule. If a time looks wrong, use the feedback link on the mosque detail page.
